Phases of heat cycle

January 28, 2021, 9:35 PM
Q: My dog is going through her first ever heat cycle. It's been about 20 days. She went from having a bloody discharge, to a faint pink discharge, but now is having a yellow discharge. What is the yellow discharge and is this considered normal for the cycle phase she's in?
A: A typical cycle lasts about 3 weeks.  The first phase with bloody discharge lasts about 10 days, then there is a pale pink or straw colored discharge for 5-6 days then a creamy white discharge that persists to the end of the cycle.  This is the Clean up phase and hence the discharge made up of many white blood cellls.  There is considerable variation in color and durations so this is just a typical example.
