Is Poop Harmful?

Q: I caught my puppy licking her poop. That is so gross. Why is she doing this and what can I do to make her stop and can this make her sick?

A: Although licking or even eating her own poop is not a threat to your puppy it is certainly repulsive. It does not signal a disease or nutritional deficiency in your puppy. It stems from your puppy's instinctive behavior to keep it's immediate environment clean. There are products that you would add to your puppy's food to curb this habit. One is "forbid" and another is "curtail", there are also others designed to discourage coprophagy.
