Reverse Sneeze

Q: Our 11 mo Frenchie has episodes of a breathing problem that look like stridor. She can take up to two to three minutes to get back to normal and it is very disturbing to watch. Is this common, portend bad things or have a solution to prevent? Due to food allergy? Mostly happens at night. Thank you

A: The snorting, wheezing sounds you hear are called a reverse sneeze and are due to irritation in the back of the throat or pharynx. Since it involves and exaggerated head motion and loud sounds many owners are alarmed when in reality it rarely causes any thing other than temporary symptoms. Some triggers are carpet and air fresheners, dust, pollen, smoke and just dry air. As long as it is only a few times a day there is no need to do anything.
