Doesn’t like to be alone

Q: Hi, I have the puppy for 5 days now. Today is the first day we left her in the play pen in the family room and we work from our room. She whined and screamed for > 40mins until my son moved his work to the family room next to the play pen. I believe we should ignore her when she is whining for attention, however, 40 mins whining is a long time...any advice?
A: Usually acknowledging the whining by moving closer will only make her whine more if you try to change. Ignoring is a better plan, returning only if she has been quiet at least 30 minutes.
